Restorative Dentistry & Implants Q & A

What are restorative dentistry and implants?

Restorative dentistry is a type of oral health care focused on rebuilding your teeth to their natural shape, size, and color after damage or decay. Restorative treatments maintain your tooth function and the natural appearance of your teeth.

Dental implants are restorative treatments for missing teeth. Without a tooth and root, the jawbone surrounding the gap begins to deteriorate. That can have a detrimental effect on your oral health and appearance because your jawbone helps maintain your facial structure.

Implants are artificial tooth roots made of titanium. Dr. Lee and the team surgically place these small metal posts into your jaw. They not only replace your tooth roots to prevent bone resorption, they also hold your replacement teeth securely in place.

Are there different types of restorative dentistry and implants?

There are many restorative dentistry services, including:

A filling replaces decayed or damaged portions of your teeth with composite resin or amalgam (silver).

Dental crowns

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that fit over your damaged or decayed teeth. They restore the size, shape, and color of your teeth. Crowns also protect your teeth from further damage. They come in a variety of materials, including ceramic, porcelain, and zirconia.

A dental bridge is a treatment for missing teeth. If you have a missing tooth, a false tooth takes the place of the space your natural tooth one occupied. Crowns attached to your adjacent teeth, anchoring the artificial tooth in place.

Dental implants are a permanent alternative to a bridge. They’re available as single tooth restorations, or they can restore multiple teeth.

What is the process like for restorative dentistry and implants?

Once you choose the right restorative treatment for your smile, Dr. Lee and the team take digital impressions of your teeth with the Medit intraoral scanner. That means there are no messy, uncomfortable physical impressions. These impressions help create molds for your new restorations.

If you’re visiting for nonsurgical treatment, you may need to return to Personalee Dental for a second appointment. During this visit, the team places your new restoration. Some restorative treatments, like fillings, only require one visit.

A dental implant is a surgical treatment that typically takes weeks or months to plan and place. During your surgical appointment, the team uses anesthesia to numb your mouth before surgically placing the implant. It takes about 6-12 weeks for your mouth to heal before Dr. Lee and the team can take your impressions.

Depending on how many implants you need, the team may recommend dental crowns, a bridge, or dentures for your replacement teeth. At your final visit, the team attaches your replacement teeth to your implants.
